About Simon

Building products sinceage thirteen

22+ years of building, from an online game with thousands of daily players (started in 2004) to B2C platforms for Vattenfall today. The sectors change. The question underneath doesn't: is this worth it for whoever uses it?

The entrepreneur

Product Owner avant la lettre. Product development in practice, years before the term became common.

Since age thirteen. Maffia World live in 2005. Thousands of daily users, micropayments via 0900 numbers, Procter and Gamble as commercial partner. The foundation beneath everything that follows.

Maffia World, built from scratch in PHP and MySQL at age thirteen. By 2005 one of the most visited websites in the Netherlands, with thousands of daily players. Micropayments via 0900 numbers, pioneering work with Mollie long before fintech was a term. Commercial partnerships with Procter & Gamble. An external development team managed, features prioritised through a points system in Excel. The first-ever backlog, without the word.

Then MyStudyBook with Bol.com as partner. Awarded the Amsterdam Student Entrepreneur Prize and three prizes at the Bol.com Developer Contest (Best Design, Audience Award and Technology). At 21, founded and led IAA Young Professionals Netherlands: youngest chair ever of the International Advertising Association in the country.

“Value doesn’t come from wanting to sell something. It comes from a user feeling it’s worth paying for.”

The product leader

From one team to 46 people. From one product to four at once.

At The Learning Network, editorial lead of three Scrum teams for one of the largest e-commerce players in the Netherlands. From #21 to #7 in the Twinkle100, €300M in revenue. A fully new e-commerce platform in Azure Cloud, with SSO for students and teachers, GDPR and security as hard constraints. Then at PinkRoccade Healthcare as Lead Product Owner and executive team member. Four custom products in parallel, 1,600 bugs on the backlog on arrival, P&L responsibility. Introduced Design-First: clients committing contractually before development starts. Legacy replaced step by step through a new API architecture.

The peak of this phase: Iddink Group. Part of the executive team, three years, four DevOps teams (46 members across the Netherlands and India), SAFe PI Planning, budget and HR responsibility. DMCT handles daily peaks of tens of millions of requests for 600,000+ students. On arrival, thousands of backlog items, teams blocking each other's deployments, and DUO chain integrations that had to land quarterly. What followed: pressure cooker sessions to cut through the backlog, a new team built from a PoC, DUOstubs and IddinkHub on Azure, and a two-weekly release cadence that actually held up.

“Simon sees through the business in a flash, is adaptive, and can motivate people to go the extra mile. He gets things done, even in complex political environments where others think it’s impossible.”

The specialist

Same discipline, different sector. Each time recalibrated.

At IBM/Kyndryl, Service Delivery Squad Leader for ABN AMRO: three DevOps teams (36 members across the Netherlands and India), P&L responsibility, and a Cloud & Scrum learning programme for 160+ people. Steering on stability, security and the migration of MainFrame and Midrange banking to Azure. At the same time, steering the IBM-to-Kyndryl carve-out: three budget rounds, a new domain setup, uninterrupted delivery. In parallel, co-founded MyDish in the middle of COVID: executive team member, responsible for product development and operations, partnerships with Lightspeed, Adyen and Lavazza. Then at Mileway, leading two DevOps teams across ten countries, and at Orthocenter renewing healthcare software for 52 clinics.

Currently Product Owner at Vattenfall for Home Energy Management and eMobility B2C. A seven-person Scrum DevOps team set up from scratch. Greenfield product development for a full B2C portfolio: charging stations, energy contracts for EV drivers and smart charging, available on MijnVattenfall and in the Vattenfall app. The product roadmap negotiated between commercial, energy trading and regulatory stakeholders: three worlds that rarely read the same timeline, on one roadmap.

“An experienced Product Owner who guides the teams he works with. Focused on value, working closely with stakeholders and translating that into a comprehensive backlog.”

What drives him

Why heworks this way

Value over output.

Simon doesn’t build to tick things off. He builds to put something in place that genuinely helps users and moves organisations forward. That starting point runs from his first own platforms to his work in complex enterprise environments.

This way of seeing isn’t learned.

He was already doing product development before job titles, frameworks or processes existed for it. You still see it in how he works: direct, critical, and focused on what genuinely adds value. Scrum Master is a sparring partner, not an executor.

Collaboration

What clientsnotice

Two weeks, not two months

Stakeholder interviews in week one, first backlog revision in week two. Onboarding happens along the way, not as its own phase.

Decisions, including the hard ones

Trade-offs made explicit instead of deferred. Stakeholders know where they stand.

Business and tech in the same sentence

Commercial context translated into technical choices and back. Without a translator in between. In conversations with architects it goes into depth, not dominance.

Framework follows context

A 46-person SAFe PI Planning is not the same as a 7-person greenfield team. Scrum, SAFe or Kanban adapts to that.
